Isolite™ - Safety in the ceiling
Recessed downlights are a very popular form of lighting for MANY good reasons. They are classy, streamlined, space efficient, effective and they can highlight particular features of interest.
However without a fire resistant enclosure, downlights are left EXPOSED above your ceiling and can become the foundation for a string of undesirable consequences....
A hole in your insulation (for safety clearances) may cost nothing immediately, but the property owner keeps on paying for it dearly. More importantly however, it creates a TRAP for loose material and time build up, collecting it around any high temp globe!!!
Ask yourself HOW a hole or gap will prevent rodents, nesting birds, turbulence (even people, inadvertantly) from moving unfixed loose material or ducting against just one downlight (among many?) bridging the gap and putting EVERYTHING at risk?
The images below show two such installations from countless low voltage downlights installed in Australian ceilings without adequate protection against the risk of fire and harm to persons and property. THESE INSTALLATIONS DO NOT COMPLY WITH AUSTRALIAN STANDARDS AS/NZS3000:2000.

SOME INSTALLATIONS ARE EVEN MORE HAZARDOUS THAN THESE E.G. DOWNLIGHTS INSTALLED TOO CLOSE TO TIMBER, INSULATION OR DUCTING. And many inadequate, non compliant attempts by homeowners and tradespeople to solve the multiple issues of downlights have sadly resulted in fires.
DON'T THINK "IF IT'S NOT VISIBLE IT'S NOT A RISK"
The risk of one exposed high temp downlight in your ceiling is
A DEVASTATING CEILING FIRE
Ask anyone who has had a house fire, particularly a ceiling fire about their recollections... it often haunts them for years... the trauma, devastation, helplessness, fear, suffering, loss including irreplaceables. More pain comes with regrets when it simply could have been prevented.
With this in mind Metropolitan Fire Brigades in Australia have now issued a public warning regarding the serious nature of the hazard created by the exposed high temperature parts of a downlight. One Fire Brigade reported a fire on average every three to five days caused by downlights. Up until recently public reports have mostly only classified them as ‘electrical faults’.
The smoke alarm can give people a false sense of security when in fact it does not prevent ceiling fires and rarely detects them early.... EXPOSED HIGH TEMP DOWNLIGHTS IN A CEILING ARE POTENTIALLY LETHAL.
There are too many issues at stake to attempt to create your own solution. You need Isolite™ Guard.....fully tested and approved.....this product pays for itself in energy savings alone.....easily fitted to new or existing 12V downights. (Talk to us about 240V e.g. GU10, compact fluorescents).
Isolite's unique anchoring system resists forces produced by air movement, people and/or rodents. Our downlight guards are manufactured from lightweight high temperature fire resistant materials approved by the Electrical Safety Authorities in Australia.
Isolite™ Downlight Guard offers:
VITAL FIRE PREVENTION IN THE CEILING...
isolates up to 300°C exposed fire hazards from insulation and flammable materials by enclosing them with an approved fire resistant barrier.
PLUS INCREASED ENERGY EFFICIENCY...
stops substantial heating & cooling loss in living areas through exposed downlights.
PLUS A CLEANER, HEALTHIER INDOORS...
