Isolite™ - Safety in the ceiling
Recessed downlights are a very popular form of lighting. They are classy, streamlined and effective and they can highlight particular features of interest.
However without an approved fire resistant enclosure, downlights are left exposed above your ceiling and can cause a string of undesirable consequences.
Gaps in your insulation (for safety clearances) may not cost anything immediately, but the property owner keeps on paying for it dearly. More importantly, however, it creates a trap for loose material build up, collecting them around the high temperature globe.
You can ask yourself – “how can a gap in the insulation prevent rodents, birds, turbulence or even people, from moving loose material or ducting against a downlight, bridging the gap and putting the building and tenants at risk of fire?”
The two images below show just two examples of such installations among millions of low voltage downlights installed in Australian ceilings without adequate protection against the risk of fire and harm to persons and property. These installations do not comply with AS/NZS3000:2007 Section 4.5.2.3.

Some installations are even more hazardous than these e.g. downlights installed too close to timber, insulation or ducting. And many inadequate attempts by some homeowners and tradespeople to solve these problems have sadly resulted in fires.
Don’t think "If it's not visible, it's not a risk"
The risk of one exposed downlight in your ceiling is -
A DEVASTATING CEILING FIRE
Ask anyone who has had a house fire about their recollections. It often haunts them for years, the trauma and devastation, sense of helplessness and fear and loss of irreplaceable items. More pain comes with regrets, when it simply could have been prevented to start with – with Isolite.
Metropolitan Fire Brigades in Australia have issued a public warning regarding the serious nature of the hazard created by exposed high temperature downlights. One Fire Brigade reported a fire ‘on average every three to five days caused by downlights’.
Smoke alarms can give people a false sense of security, when they do not detect or prevent ceiling fires - EXPOSED RECESSED DOWNLIGHTS ARE POTENTIALLY LETHAL.
